The Art of Mixing & Matching Dining Chairs

Mixing and matching chairs requires a little thought and desire. To do it well, you basically put together items according to your personal taste, using thought to pull them all together in one cohesive look.

Some might call it “art”. That probably why I love interior design so much!

Remember as a kid, your outfits could be quite unique? It’s a big day when you can start dressing yourself.

As a mom, I know that when my kids started to dress themselves, they weren’t always perfectly matched. When my middle daughter wanted to be like her big sister who graduated from the diaper stage to panties, Samantha came out one day in jeans, a pale yellow floral top, her plastic high heels with purple fur, a turquoise furry headband, Mardi Gras necklaces and a pair of Barney panties on over her jeans. She was so proud!

Another fashion icon is my niece, Grace. I’ll never forget her rainbow metallic bathing suit paired with her sliver winter moon boots during a hot, sweltery summer month. She walked  around like it was no ones business, and it wasn’t.

As we get older, we tend to take more care about making sure we are pulled together just right. But I do think there is something to say about designing your home, and wardrobe, with character and your unique personality.

You do not have to look like everyone else of have your home come in “sets” of furniture as sold by most big furniture stores.

MIX and MATCH

I found some great inspiration to help you see how to give your dining space character. When you think about all the meals you’ll share with others around a table, how many personalities will join you?

Think about your different family members, variety of friends, neighbors who pop over. All are unique.

Why shouldn’t your chairs be too?

WHAT TO MIX and MATCH

Decide if you want to room to formal, casual, or eclectic (my fave).

Styles: country, chic, modern, mid-century, farmhouse, industrial, rustic, elegant, traditional, etc.

Materials: wood, wicker, metal, acrylic, bamboo, leather, fabric, etc.

Finishes: upholstered, painted, stained, charred (yes I mean with fire), etc.

The most important thing to remember is …

There is no right or wrong in design, especially if it speaks to you and your personal style.Click To Tweet

Modern Traditional Mix

Upholstered chairs with a large butterfly print are pared with mid century modern chairs and vintage chippy paint, skirted chair. On the other side, an upholstered settee could be pulled up if needed.

Mismatched chairs unified by one single color…a yellow in high gloss. Tip…if you don’t like painting, find a painter who can spray them for a smooth, professional finish.

Upholstered and acrylic chairs

The acrylic chairs allow your eye to keep flowing to the back of the room. These work great in small spaces such as this to help minimize the “visual weight” of the pieces.

Upholstered chairs

This just screams “celebration”! Upholstered arm chairs mixed with side chairs. All wood is similar in color and finish. The pop is in the fun upholstery used on each chair.

Acrylic Chairs

A traditional table paired with mid century modern acrylic chairs in a variety of colors. The beauty of acrylic furniture is that it appears so light because of the translucent nature of it. Unexpected elegance.

Mismatched stools

The quality of this photo is poor but I did want to show you a fun idea of using old vintage stools around a table, each with a different distressed color. If you have a large family, can’t you imagine how each person might gravitate to their favorite color and claim that seat as their own…even if they move them around.

We are creatures of habit, don’t you agree?

This is so pretty. My mom has two chairs like these in her garage that are in need of some love. I can see them beautifully recovered and sitting around a table like this.

Mom, if you read this…I’m sure you’ll agree. 🙂

Your Turn

Think about the chairs you have in your home.

What if you love the idea of mixing and matching but don’t have enough to pull it off. Think about a couple of family members or friends who might want to change things up with you. Or think about the random chairs that might have been handed down to you over the years.

Hit the thrift stores and flea markets. Check out garage sales. You could easily create an amazing dining experience with a little thought, time, and persistence. Plus, you can save a ton of money and give people and fun, unexpected experience…allowing them to get to know you a bit more without saying a word.

What chairs do you have that you can use?

Are you into mixing and matching or does that make you crazy?
